Okay, no more doom and gloom. While there’s plenty around to share, it is after all the Holiday Season.
This holiday season is a special one because there are so many people in need. One doesn’t have to look far to learn of somebody less fortunate than themselves. This time of year seems to bring out a greater awareness of the situation for reasons that I can’t explain. And, we use this season as a time to give when in reality every season of the year is a time to give.
I recently asked a client of ours to join me on a tour of the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul. I have toured the facility numerous times over the years and have admired the tremendous work that goes on behind the scenes to help those less fortunate. My client (who will remain nameless) was struck by the countless services that are offered by the Society and the vast quantities of aid available. With seemingly so much inventory on hand, how can it be that anyone would do without? The answer is simple; the need is growing faster than the donations.
Too often we believe that someone else will aid the individual or family down on their luck, and that surely there’s somebody or someplace that is taking care of this monumental challenge. It is true that there are several non-profit agencies that do tremendous work for the less fortunate, but there are still too many empty shelves, too many children and families hungry, and too many people in need of a change of clothes for a hopeful job interview.
After the tour last month, I committed myself once again to aid in some small way so that perhaps at least a few people would have an opportunity to receive some of life’s basic needs: food & shelter. I and my employees will be donating to the Society of Saint Vincent De Paul by closing the office for one full morning in mid-December so we can join the volunteers at the dining hall at 1075 W. Jackson St. to help serve a hearty meal to those in need. We will put on our charitable hats and we will indeed help again this year and next, and the next, and the next. The warmth and satisfaction from giving cannot be replaced with anything that we’d ever receive.
I hope this letter inspires just one person to consider giving to the multitude of programs that exist in Arizona and if you haven’t identified a place just yet, let me introduce you to one of the most well respected “offers of hope”, The Society of Saint Vincent De Paul. They are located at 420 W. Watkins Rd. in Phoenix and would welcome any involvement that you’d like to give. Whether it is volunteering, donating, or simply sending a warm sentiment of encouragement, it will always be welcomed with open arms.
Find the spirit of giving this holiday season and spread the word that our blessings are sometimes the most important things we can count.
