Newsletter

Hello to all of my friends, clients, vendors, colleagues and associates. I am reminded that it’s time to write the cover letter for the Summer Cooley Newsletter. Summer seemed to be a bit redundant in that last sentence considering it is 114 degrees today, I guess it’s obvious!

Let me ask why at this point you’re still reading and haven’t found your way to a much cooler place? San Diego would be fine; Flagstaff would be fine and Hawaii even better. Since you are reading this, I’ll continue and ask that you indulge me by reading on.

Summer time in Phoenix brings a very interesting time, complete with Monsoons. Couple the summer doldrums with the current state of the economy and it leaves us all wondering why we don’t just pack a bag and escape to a more enjoyable environment both in terms of temperature and a more vibrant economy. Where might that be?

It is true that for many there has been almost no relief in terms of satisfaction relating to sales performance or a possible job for those unemployed and I too am feeling perplexed regarding the current market conditions and the continued negative news regarding our economy. There for a while I thought we were hearing much more news about consumer confidence and thought that I was seeing more spending going on on all fronts. The news as of late seems to have dashed those hopes and we’re still not seeing much prosperous growth within Arizona. Unemployment is still up; lay-offs continue; furloughs continue even within the publication industry. Being a Public Relations firm and trying to catch a reporter at their desk instead of on furlough seems to be one of my biggest challenges this month. This morning’s paper had headlines of “Bashas to close 10 more stores”; that can’t help the situation. My heartfelt sentiments go the Basha family!

At Cooley, we’ve been fortunate, our clients continue to need additional marketing support and we’ve experienced no decline in ad budgets. However, make no mistake, we’re seeing clients pay slower than in previous months and we’re hearing frustration from clients as their sales numbers slow this summer. We’re here to help in any way we can. We will continue to seek opportunities for our clients’ budgets to be stretched even further and we’re leveraging every negotiation with greater efficiency.

We will all make it through this heat-wave as we do every year and we’ll all make it through this tough economy as recessions are always cyclical. Tip a glass of your favorite cool beverage and be thankful that we’re in this together and we have our health and humor.

Enjoy this quarter’s newsletter and I look forward to writing to you in the Fall.

With kind regards,
